Ballet is a chance to watch magic happen. The dancers' bodies embody liquid movement. The choreography and music pair together to entrance the mind. Ballet is an art and tells story through its movements. Winter is a magical time of the year and the perfect time to see a ballet performance.

 

Vienna, Austria

Vienna Ballet is considered one of the world's top ballet companies. It was formerly named the Vienna State Opera Ballet as it is based at the Vienna State Opera building. Ballet was performed for the first time in Vienna in 1622 and has since made the city a destination to see ballet.

The best places to see a ballet performance in Vienna is at the Vienna State Opera House and Vienna Volksoper. Both are great choices that will leave you reliving the performance over and over.

 

Saint Petersburg, Russia

Ballet was not created in Russia, but it was reinvented there. In contrast to other forms of ballet, Russian ballet features high extensions and dynamic turns. Russian ballet is unique compared to other forms of ballet because it has a blend of classical ballet and Russian folk dance. Having this uniqueness in their dance, it is captivating to watch.

The Mariinsky Ballet is the classical ballet company of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The Mariinsky Ballet is one of the world's leading ballet companies.

The best places to view a ballet performance in Saint Petersburg is the Mariinsky Theatre, Mikhailovsky Theatre, Hermitage Theatre, Alexandrinsky Theatre, Aurora Ballet Hall, and Russian Classical Ballet Palace.

Swan Lake is the most famous ballet preformed in Saint Peterburg. However, all ballets are beautiful and any performance you see you will be please. Other incredible performances are Giselle, La Bayadere, The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, and The Sleeping Beauty.

 

Milan, Italy

Ballet is said to have originated in Italy around the 15th century. When it was originally created, ballet was performed at lavish events and wedding celebrations. Italy set a standard for modern day ballet.

Teatro alla Scala of Milan is the most famous opera theater in the world. La Scala is located in Milan, Italy.

 

Paris, France

Although ballet was created in Italy, it was standardized in France. France popularized and standardized ballet, leaving most people to believe it originated in France. The first ballet company was opened in France and most companies around the world credit France for the opening of others.

The most popular place to see ballet in France is at Palais Garnier. However, there are other amazing places to see incredible performances such as the national opera house, Opéra Garnier, and Opéra Bastille.

 

New York, USA

New York is one of the most well-known ballet companies in the world. New York ballet performances are famous for their grace and elegance. Ballet was first brought to the United States by an Austrian ballerina who was on tour in the 1840s. Although this was the first exposure the States got, it wasn't the last. Throughout the year, as immigration took place, ballet was brought from people all over the world. Ballet in the United States has influence from all over the world, giving each performance an amazing uniqueness and combination of techniques.

There are lots of amazing theaters to view ballet in New York including the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center. the Joyce Theatre, New York Live Arts, New York City Center, and the Baryshnikov Arts Center.
