Disney Locations Around the World

Disney Land brings all of our favorite fairytales to life and allows us to join their world. Thanks to Disney Land, we are able to experience different worlds. Disney Land has expanded throughout the years and now there are Disney Land locations around the world. Although each Disney location feels like classic Disney, they each have special elements to highlight the uniqueness of their country.

Hong Kong, China

Hong Kong Disney is one of the smallest Disney locations, but its size does not mean it lacks the classic Disney allure. At Hong Kong Disney you will enjoy Disney-themed food, taking pictures with your favorite Disney characters, and exploring parts of the park that are unique to Honk Kong Disney.

The Parks

The park consists of seven themed areas: Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point, and Toy Story Land. When you enter a park, the guest is completely immersed in a themed environment and is unable to see or hear any other realm. Each park contains shopping areas and restaurants.

  • Main Street, USA: The decor is small-town America from the years 1890–1910. Unlike Main Streets from other parks, Main Street at Hong Kong Disneyland is built mainly of wood instead of stone.

  • Adventureland: This land features jungle themed adventures and sights. It features a large island area home to Tarzan's Treehouse, which is circled by the Jungle Cruise. Adventureland is also home to the "Festival of the Lion King" show.

  • Tomorrowland: This land is a vision of the future. The design features metallic trim, dominated by blue and purple hues.

  • Fantasyland: This land brings characters from fairy tales and Disney films to life. Fantasyland features Castle of Magical Dreams (Sleeping Beauty's Castle) as its icon. It also has several attractions based on Disney films such as The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, It's a Small World and Cinderella's Carousel. There is also Fantasy Gardens where costumed Disney characters can be met, and a Fairy Tale Forest.

  • Grizzly Gulch: Is set in an abandoned mining town set amidst mountains and woods. This land is the Hong Kong equivalent of Frontierland and Critter Country.

  • Mystic Point: This land is the heart of a dense, uncharted rain forest where supernatural events take place. The site features Mystic Manor, home of Lord Henry Mystic, a world traveler and adventurer and his mischievous monkey, Albert.

  • Toy Story Land: This land is based on the film series Toy Story, and feature's themes and characters for the movies.

What makes it unique?

Hong Kong Disneyland attempted to avoid problems of cultural backlash by incorporating Chinese culture, customs and traditions when designing and building the resort, including adherence to the rules of feng shui. Notably, a bend was put in a walkway near the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort entrance so good qi energy would not flow into the South China Sea. The theme park's cast members speak Cantonese, English and Mandarin. Guide maps are printed in traditional and simplified Chinese as well as English.

Shanghai, China

"Authentically Disney, distinctly Chinese.” There is no “American” Main Street USA, but rather a character-themed Mickey Avenue to funnel guests into the park. Queue lines are shorter as the Chinese don’t mind close proximity to each other. There are more shows as well as character meet and greets, passive activities and lots of picture taking! There is no Haunted Mansion, as ancestor worshiping is a common practice in China and this would be deemed disrespectful. A trip to Disney in Shanghai will give you a Disney experience you know and love while being authentically unique.

The Parks

During the construction of the park's Chinese architects, designers, and teams of researchers were hired to find ways to incorporate Chinese cultural elements. Many usual Disney Park features have been redesigned or are absent from Shanghai Disneyland to cater for Chinese visitors' preferences. The center of the park features a collection of Chinese zodiac gardens called the Gardens of Imagination. Restaurant seating is different because Chinese guests take longer over meals. Also, there is more live entertainment as many Chinese patrons prefer that to thrill rides. The park currently has seven themed areas: Mickey Avenue, Gardens of Imagination, Fantasyland, Treasure Cove, Adventure Isle, Tomorrowland, and Toy Story Land.

  • Mickey Avenue: Mickey Avenue is the entrance to the park and is equivalent to Main Street, U.S.A. The area is inspired by the personalities of Disney cartoon characters and Disney films.

  • Gardens of Imagination: Features seven 11-acre Chinese gardens with each of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac represented by Disney characters. Attractions of this park include Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Fantasia Carousel, Marvel Superheroes at Marvel Universe, and a meet-and-greet pavilion featuring Marvel characters. Entertainment includes castle stage shows as well as nightly Ignite the Dream, A Nighttime Spectacular of Magic and Light show.

  • Fantasyland: Themed to Disney animated films. The land features the Enchanted Storybook Castle. The castle is the largest in any Disney theme park and features the Royal Banquet Hall restaurant, a boutique, Voyage to the Crystal Grotto, and a boat ride around and under the castle that takes guests past scenes from films including Tangled, Aladdin, Mulan, Fantasia, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Attractions in this park include Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Peter Pan's Flight, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration, Alice's Curious Labyrinth, and the Hunny Pot Spin.

  • Treasure Cove: Themed to an 18th-century Spanish harbor town located on a Caribbean Island that has been captured by Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. The main attraction of this land is Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure, a dark ride based on the films.

  • Adventure Isle: Adventure Isle is the equivalent to Adventureland. Focused around a mysterious lost world full of hidden treasures, the land features Roaring Rapids, a river rapids ride through the land's towering Roaring Mountain and Soaring Over the Horizon. Additionally, the land features Tarzan: Call of the Jungle, a live acrobatic stage show, and Camp Discovery.

  • Tomorrowland: The park's futuristic-themed land. Unlike the other Tomorrowland's, this version does not have Space Mountain and instead is home to TRON Light cycle Power Run, an indoor Tron-themed roller coaster. Other attractions include Star Wars Launch Bay, Stitch Encounter, and Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue.

  • Toy Story Land: This land is themed around the Disney films, Toy Story.

  • City of Zootopia: This land is not yet open but is an upcoming park. The theme of the park will be based on the Disney film, Zootopia. It will be the first Zootopia-themed area at any Disney Park around the world. It is planned to be opened in 2023.

What makes it unique?

Disney Land in Shanghai is uniquely its own and has many distinctions from other Disney Lands around the world. There are many attractions that are only accessible in Shanghai Disney Land. There are also many cultural adaptions that make this park unique. There is no Haunted Mansion, as spirits of the dead are treated with reverence in China. On the ride, Soaring Over the Horizon, the ride ends flying over Pudong, the showplace for modern Shanghai's business and architecture prowess, whereas other parks end the ride over the Disney Land Park. There is also a garden area where Disney characters are associated with the Chinese Zodiacs. Restaurants serve both Chinese and Western foods.
