Nature has the ability to do things that don't seem possible. Natural wonders have us feeling that scenes were taken out of fairy tales and dropped into our world. One place that leaves us feeling like this is the snow beach in Japan.
Where is it?
The alluring snow beach is located in the west of Japan and stretches from the eastern Kyogamisaki Cape, Kyoto to the western Hakuto Kaigan Coast, Tottori. This location is considered a geopark (a UNESCO-designated area containing one or more sites of particular geological importance, intended to conserve the geological heritage and promote public awareness of it, typically through tourism) and has several geological sites that are related to the formation of the Sea of Japan.
What is there to see?
Along with the incredible beach where sand and ocean meet, this geopark in Japan has sand dunes, sand bars, volcanoes, and valleys. There are also rare plants which can rarely be seen outside of this area in Japan. There is also a tourist center which gives visitors some information on the formation of the dunes and why they are important.
Tottori
When there isn’t snow on the ground, this area of Japan known as the Tottori Sand Dunes. These dunes are are located outside the city of Tottori and span for 9 miles. The dunes are a 20 minute bus ride from Tottori station. After exploring the natural formations of the dunes, you can climb to the top of them and take in the view of the sea. You can also try sand boarding and paragliding. Keep your eye out for camels as they are always hanging around and are even available to give you a ride around the dunes.
Visiting in summer or winter will give you both amazing yet different experiences. Summer offers more activities, where winter offers sites that you may never be able to see again.
