Lake Assal, Djibouti

Lake Assal, Djibouti is a crystalized volcanic lake. It is a crater salt lake surrounded by dormant volcanoes and black lava fields which surround its emerald water. The wet section of the lake is a body of extremely salty water fed by hot springs. The dry section features a white salt bed from which lake water evaporated over the years. Lake Assal is the lowest point in Africa and the thirds lowest point on earth. It also has no outflow and due to high evaporation, the salinity level of its waters is 10 times that of the sea, making it the third most saline body of water in the world.

Activates

Lake Assal is one of the hottest places on earth, reaching 126 degrees Fahrenheit, with warm desert climates and low precipitation. At the lake you can gaze at the surreal, sunken landscapes paired with wildlife such as bushes, and animals such as camels, lizards, small birds, and insects. The lake itself is surrounded by dormant volcanoes which make for excellent scenery if you choose to hike around the lake. It is also possible to swim in the lake. The water however is so salty that it can burn your skin. It won't necessarily burn while you're in the water but once you're out of the water it will leave a layer of salt on your skin that becomes extremely irritating. However, because of the level of salt in the water, anyone is able to float in the water.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Wear shoes in the lake, as the salt is rough and burns any cuts

  • Avoid getting the salt in cuts and eyes!

  • Pack a loose pair of clothes to change into after going into the water as the salt water leaves a film on your skin

  • Consider bringing fresh water to rinse your skin off with, but keep in mind to use it sparingly as fresh water is precious to the local population

  • There are no shops at the lake so take what you will need for the day

How to Get There

The best way to get to the lake is by taxi. It is best to leave early in the morning as it is a long drive and it is cooler in the morning than the afternoon. Djibouti is an expensive country so be prepared for an expensive taxi ride.
